Program Goal:
The goal of this webcast is to familiarize information professionals with current and emerging mobile technologies, innovative initiatives using mobile devices, useful mobile software applications, and funding options for projects using mobile devices.

Program Objectives:

• describe mobile technology and its value for librarians and health care professional
• demonstrate mobile technology devices and innovative applications
• explore programs that illustrate the potential of mobile technology for health professionals
• discuss funding opportunities to create and sustain mobile technology programs

2009 is not quite over yet, but the Board has been busy preparing for the upcoming 2010 Annual Meeting and has established a meeting date!

The upcoming Annual will be held on March 12, 2010. Please reserve that date and mark your calendars! Further details are forthcoming.

The Local Assistance Committee (LAC) expresses heartfelt thanks to everyone who volunteered their personal time to help with MLA09 in May!

Volunteers from all over– UH Manoa Library Program graduate students, Hawaii librarians and library staff from across the state and even a few from different parts of the U.S. with connections to Hawaii, retired librarians, and even a recently graduated medical student– stepped forward to lend a helping hand!

What:  MLA Webcast: Finding Work-Life Balance: Strategies for You and Your Institution

We are very thankful to the Pacific Southwest Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine for their generous sponsorship of this event

We are very pleased to announce that the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center May 15 – 20, 2009. Thirty years have passed since MLA held its national conference in Hawaii, so this is an exciting event and a great opportunity for local librarians to attend a national library conference at home.

You may find information about the conference here: http://www.mlanet.org/am/am2009/ Please note that MLA extends the MLA member discount registration rate to members of certain other professional library associations, such as ALISE and AALL, among others. Also note that there is NO CHARGE for “exhibits only” passes.

In return for 4 hours of volunteer service, volunteers receive a one day registered conference pass (for those who are NOT members of MLA). It is possible to earn multiple days for multiple 4-hour shifts. Listed below are the volunteer opportunities all of which will take place at the Hawaii Convention Center. Please respond to Lee Adams,  co-chair of the Local Assistance Committee’s Volunteer Recruitment Committee  as soon as possible, but no later than March 6, 2009, if you are interested in volunteering.

Conference Bag Stuffing:
Thursday, May 14^th from 12p – 4pm (lunch will be provided)

Hospitality Booth Staffing – this includes answering questions from conference attendees on topics listed below. Do not worry – resources will be available to help you answer questions.

• available conference services, e.g., placement, member resource room
• emergency services, e.g., nearby hospital and fire department
• public transportation
• restaurant suggestions
• entertainment information

The hours of the hospitality booth are as follows. Shifts are a minimum of 2 hours:

• Friday, May 15, 6:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
• Saturday, May 16, 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
• Sunday, May 17, 6:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

On September 5, 2008, the MLA09 Program Committee convened at the Honolulu Convention Center (HCC).  Members from MLA Headquarters, the National Program Committee (NPC), and the Local Assistance Committee (LAC) gathered for the day’s scheduled meeting to iron out plans for the Annual Convention which will be held from May 15-20, 2009 in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii!

The gracious HCC staff also provided the Committee with a tour of the modern facility.  Click on the Events page to view photos of members and visit the MLA09 Wiki for photos of the recent HCC tour or directly to the Wiki’s Photo Gallery Album.  The Planning Committee is working hard and with great excitement and enthusiasm to plan an Annual that is exciting, fun, yet relaxing for all who attend! We hope to see you here next year!

MLA08 in Chicago has come and gone…thank you to all the chapter members who worked so hard to make the MLA09 Information Booth and ML09 Invitation a huge success. The physical booth area was fabulous!! The Hawaii Convention Center representative came with macadamia nut chocolates, shell leis, and special pineapple MLA pins (I have a bunch that she gave me for our chapter members). The YouTube video that Linda Uchida worked so hard on ran on a large flat screen. Drawings were held several times a day for those fabulous cookie boxes from Honolulu Cookie Company and Big Island Candies. The “invitation” –the likes of which MLA has never seen included 3 talented dancers from the Polynesian Cultural Center and two musicians–was issued during the last business meeting. the colorful gift bags were given away then (thanks to Luree Ohigashi Oasay who coordinated the bags, to Jane Barnwell who carted all the giveaways in a huge suitcase to Chicago, and everyone else for all their generous donations. In addition to the bags, three scholarships of $100 to be applied toward the MLA09 conference registration fees were given away. (Check out these professional photos from the MLA08 website http://www.mlanet.org/am/photos/thumbnails.php?album=45) There is a lot of interest…many librarians indicated they were bringing spouse and other family members with them. The cost of the airfare was a concern to many.

Lee Adams presented her poster PDAs and First-Year Medical Students.  Those attending from Hawaii all worked in the booth–they included Lee Adams, Jane Barnwell, Walter Benawitz, Linda Uchida, Mabel Trafford, and Ginny Tanji. In addition former Hawaii residents, Joy Graham, Claire Hamasu, and Boo Horak helped as well as folks from the Pacific Southwest NNLM, Judy Consales, Heidi Sandstrom, Julie Kwan and Kelli Ham.
